White Acres and Manitou Section 16 are two un-protected parcels of Front Range open space located right in the middle of other well known public lands such as Bear Creek Canyon, Bear Creek Park, Red Rock Canyon Open Space, and Pike National Forest. The properties offer amazing views of the Front Range foothills surrounding Pikes Peak, boast an incredible network of trails for hikers, bikers, and equestrian users, and provide critical habitat for numerous plant and animal communities. Palmer Land Trust and the Friends of Red Rock Canyon have partnered to raise $715,000 to permanently protect this important landscape.
The campaign to protect White Acres and Section 16 has two phases. The first phase focuses on raising $75,000 that will go towards the purchase of White Acres—the critical link between Red Rock Canyon Open Space and Section 16. The second phase of the campaign focuses on raising $640,000 for Section 16 itself. The goal of the campaign is to provide the matching dollars the City of Colorado Springs will need to acquire title to the properties, integrate them into the City’s Trails Open Space and Parks (TOPS) Program, and ensure their permanent protection through the use of conservation easements.
