At 6,081 feet in elevation, Wetmore is located in the foothills of the Wet Mountains, with the highest summit of the Wet Mountains resting approximately seven miles to the west.  The area's trademark is its secluded and relatively flat bottom valleys that are walled off by cliffs and bluffs.  The area can be accessed by taking Colorado Highway 96 west out of Pueblo.  Highway 96 comprises one leg of the Frontier Pathways National Scenic and Historic Byway.

Palmer Land Trust is playing a part to preserve the rural, working ranch character that Wetmore possesses.  Federal lands are abundant in the area, including 360 acres of Bureau of Land Management property and over 10,000 acres of the Pike/San Isabel National Forest centered on Bear's Head, a prominent local natural landmark.  Palmer is expanding upon federally protected lands by protecting private properties that are either adjacent to or bridge federal lands.  Big game use much of the locality for winter range.
